Essential Sleeping Hair Mask

( Picture from Pinterest )

Who wakes up with bed hair like this?
Obviously mine isn't as bad as that ^ but it's definitely not as smooth & silky like how it is in dramas.

Many people often say "bed hair" but how much do we exactly know about it? I learnt something new because I always thought that bed hair merely refers to the messy hair that we wake up to every morning, but there are more to it. When sleeping, tossing and turning causes hair to rub against the pillow, creating friction (also known as pillow friction). Pillow Friction causes the hair cuticles to open up unevenly, causing hair to be rough, frizzy or prone to tangles. Such hair damage caused by pillow friction are called Pillow Damage. As a result of Pillow Damage, you wake up the next day with frizzy, unmanageable hair like a lion’s mane, which is commonly referred to as bed hair.

Honestly think the culprits for causing pillow friction are too cute. But anyway, here are the 6 culprits for pillow friction: Toss, snap, tug & pull, knot, tangle, frizz. I've generally long hair, almost reaching my lower back & the main problem that I face would be frizz. I was told that I've oily scalp & dry hair and because I do not use conditioner (I do use leave-on conditioner sometimes), the end of my hair gets really frizzy at times. Another problem would be toss because I'm a really light sleeper, sounds of all sorts wake me up.

How do you solve the problem of having bed hair?
1) Wash your hair in the morning. Washing hair ‘resets’ the uneven alignment of hair cuticles and makes hair smooth and manageable again. Washing your hair in the morning can be a good thing because it makes you feel more refreshed for a day of work/ school BUT downside, you have to wake up much earlier (consider shampoo, conditioner, blow dry) which I'm reluctant to. I always wash my hair the night before if I have a morning appointment so that I can wake up late, take a quick shower and leave house.
2) Use the new Essential Sleeping Hair Mask, which protects each hair strand and minimizes Pillow Damage.

Introducing Essential Sleeping Hair Mask!

It's really easy to use! Pump an appropriate amount onto your hand, apply it to towel-dried/ damp hair before going to sleep. (Note: Focus on mid-length to tip & also, you do NOT need to rinse the product off) For testing purposes, I'm going to apply the hair mask on one side only. I could have done it on different days like one day with hair mask and another day without, but what if I wake up to an extremely bad hair day on one day & an extremely good hair day on the other. Then the product will either turn out to be super useful/ useless, so I've decided to do it this way, truer to the effect of the product. And also, I didn't comb my hair after applying the product, merely brushed my fingers through my hair.

Here's the result the next morning:

Obviously, this photo wasn't taken right after I woke up but the result is like this (if you apply enough hair mask)! I guess it's pretty obvious that I only applied the sleeping hair mask to one side of my hair. Left is with hair mask & right is without. There is a difference in frizziness with and without application but it's definitely not as significant as others, maybe because I don't really experience bed hair that are as bad as theirs? It's worth a try since it protects your hair, smells really nice & have the effect of "instant repair".

So let's say you need to head out really early the next morning & you don't wanna sacrifice your beauty sleep BUT you've forgotten to apply Essential sleeping hair mask the night before. Don't get into panic mode! There's another product, which is the Essential Leave-on Hair Serum which instantly repairs gives hair a healthy gloss and forms a protective veil over it.

Apply it the same way as the Sleeping Hair Mask (this product works on dry hair as well). Here, I applied the Hair Serum to the side which I did not apply the Sleeping Hair Mask the previous night.

The hair serum is a transparent liquid, with consistency similar to that of water. Just pump enough hair serum and focus on mid-length to tip of your hair and *TADA*, instant repair as it claims. Personally, I like this product a lot because it's so easy to bring around & I can apply it whenever necessary. Useful for bad hair days! There's also no specific timing to apply, suitable for the ever-so-forgetful me. Here's how it looks like after I'm done applying, Status: Good to go! Just look at how tamed my hair is (compared to the picture above)!

The best part of both products, they are not oily at all! I don't even need to wash my hands after applying. That's what I like best because I really can't stand anything oily e.g. sunblock, conditioner etc.

Both products are available at all leading supermarkets, hypermarkets, personal care stores and pharmacies, priced at $11.90 each. You may also wish to check out other products under the Essential family- I've been using Essential Nuance Airy Shampoo for at least 5 years now & adding on to that, I've started using their Hair Essence earlier this year. There must be a reason why I've been using Essential products for so long and I'm glad that these two products didn't disappoint.
